May 24, 1935......FIRST MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL NIGHT GAME!

On May 24, 1935 - it was recorded as the first night game playing in Major League Baseball.  However, the first night game was actually played by the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro League before integration in baseball happened.  But baseball has been something that all Americans can enjoy and an event that has joined all different kinds of people in all different periods in our history

America's #1 Pastime!  Baseball - I was just over at my brother's house in Cedar Grove playing with my 5 nephews, my twins, and even Kinsley who was running around!  I would have to agree with that phrase....

AMERICA'S PASTIME!

I think anyone can play baseball.  Anyone can pick up a bat, glove, and ball and swing, catch, and throw!  Or anyone can go to a game and enjoy watching and partaking in the events of guessing the attendance, getting caught on the kiss cam, following the ball with the three hats, rooting on your favorite meat in the sausage race, eating peanuts, participating in the wave, clapping, cheering, and watching the BREWERS or whatever team you like.....

Baseball has been a component in helping to break race segregation thanks to the Brooklyn Dodgers recruiting Jackie Robinson in 1947 and another biggie being Satchel Paige in 1948 with the Cleveland Indians.

Before integration you have the Roaring 20's and back to normalcy with baseball being an escape!

Present-day baseball we have the Asian and Latin-American influence with oodles of representation from those cultures and ethnicity!

Baseball is something that can tie and bring people together.  Baseball is also one of those sports where adults get to shave 20 years off of their life and act like kids again!

A.P.U.S. - MAY 23, 1788.......

Hey APUS - What is your take on the Confederate Flag?

Did you know?

On this same day in our history - May 23, 1788 - South Carolina was the 8th State to ratify the United States Constitution?!?

It was also...

  • South Carolina was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation (February 5, 1778).
  • South Carolina was also the first state to secede from the Union (December 20, 1860).
  • South Carolina was the last state to remove the Confederate Flag from their State Capitol Building (July 1, 2000).
  • Among many, many other things, it is the latest that intrigues me the most!

It amazes me that a state would fly a flag that could be so demeaning to its constituents!  Now, I know I am just a Wisconsinite and everyone has different opinions, backgrounds, beliefs, morals, ethics, etc., but can also be a argument for the "backwards" and "offensive" thinking of the Confederate Flag as well.

Aren't we the UNITED STATES of AMERICA?  Don't we stand for equality and everything else that encompasses that?  What does the flag stand for?  What does it stand for to you??  Comment - please - I am interested to find other people's ideas/opinions/backgrounds/ beliefs?

  • Southern Pride?
  • Racism?
  • Rebellion?
  • Segregation/separation?
  • Slavery?
  • Tradition?
  • Other?
How does a flag that was derived out of the Civil War and secession able to stand for anything than that?  You must be able to back up your comment/reasoning!  Looking forward to your thoughts!
